Am I being tested financially?

I am in my mom's house for two years since she passed away. I don't make much money and take care of a mentally ill brother. I have a brother that lives 5 hours away and around the time my mom passed he said what if I help financially to keep house but doesn't pay towards anything. I have a cousin that is representative payee for my ill brother and gets $1,100 monthly. My brother with me got sepsis 8 weeks ago and is recovering but can't walk yet. My cousin still pays electric, gas and phone and cable and used to give me $600 monthly for food and other expenses. My cousin said she can't give any money since my brother isn't home. With the loss of my mom's social security money and the other $600 I don't see how they feel I will keep house. I feel I will sell house. Am I being tested financially to see what I will do with all this loss of income and if I decide to sell house should I tell them first?

Since your brother is mentally ill, he may be eligible for social security disability. Has anyone taken him to apply for it? If not, it's a good idea, and while he's waiting for that, he can apply for welfare benefits and medicaid. Is he a minor or adult? If he's a minor he may be entitled to Social Security because of Mom's death..... ?

It helps if your mentally ill brother has had a proper diagnosis, has been on medication and is seeing a doctor/psychiatrist etc.

You'd have to do the research, make appointments at social security and welfare offices.

No, you’re being taken advantage of. Go to the hospital and tell them when your brother is released, he needs to go to the caretakers house, which is your cousin. Then you can go get a job and save your house.

Why is your cousin the representative payee? This is unheard of for several reasons: you're his caretaker, he lives in your home, and you're his next of kin. It's hard to answer without knowing that because the only thing I can tell you is you want to try to change this.

You need to get control of your brothers money

    you are his carer

your cousin is ripping you off
