There is the 'dog' smile, which is slightly opening their mouths, but some dogs try to emulate the 'human' smile with their lips.

Dogs and humans have been living together and interacting for thousands and thousands of years. It's pretty much accepted that a dog can understand human emotion through their body language and facial expressions. It's not a great leap of logic that they would try to emulate that.

Not intentionally or naturally, but they sure give a good impression of a smile.

Yes, dogs smile. And they recognize a human smile when they see it, too.

My Whippet looks as if she is, but it's not really a dog thing.

I don't think they do - they may mimic it, but it's not their natural instinct

    No. Stop anthropomorphizing dogs.

No, not in the way we interpret as something similar to a human smile. Their smile or sign of happiness is the wagging of their tails. I have seen dog dogs trained to smile. But don t don t really smile .

Sure. You know they do because Edie Brickell said so. She wouldn't lie.

Yes, but they do it with their tails.
