Is it unusual for my doctor to refer me to a surgeon with out a consult?

When I asked for one she said the doctor will consult on the day of surgery. I have questions and can not reach the doctor!

Update:

The surgery is for lipoma removal. Not a big deal but it is large. I know it's common but Considering the location I'm concerned with the scar it will leave since it's in a very visible area. Also don't know if I'll need a ride home, so there are some pretty general questions to ask BEFORE. The doctor's office called me back but getting answers from a receptionist is not the same as getting them from the doctor. Husband thinks I'm paranoid but I feel, my body my right to know what to expect.

In my experience that would be very unusual to be referred to a surgeon without both a physical examination and consultation with a GP.

That's standard procedure. You'll have an opportunity to ask whatever questions you have when the surgeon meets you.

In the USA this would be unusual.

No, not for minor things, and they can always call your doc. The nurse can answer this too, and yes, you should always get a ride home. Things scar, that is unavoidable, it can be revised later.

It depends on what kind of surgery it is. The first surgery I had, it was pretty minor so there was no consultation. I just showed up on the day of the surgery, and the doctor did his job.

For another different surgery, I had to sit down with a consultant to give me instructions on what I need to do prior to surgery. Funny thing is that the second surgery was pretty much the same as the first one but it went a lot faster. Just some general anesthesia and within 15 minutes, I was out of surgery and in the waiting room. 15 minutes later, I was able to go home.
