Curiosity - What side are you on about the Pledge? Do you participate! Why/why not?

Not trying to start a flame war. Trying to start a legitimate discussion, hard though that may be for this place, but lets try, ne?

Since the male football player took a knee of the field during the Pledge, a backlash has occurred, with our Idiot and Chief has made it mandatory for the NFL to either participate, or be totally absent. We call that Nationalism, and it is a short leap to tyranny.

I stopped acknowledging the Pledge a few years ago. Not because I don’t support the troops; I have/had friends who served. It is not to show my lack of pride that I live in a country where I CAN choose to not stand for it.

I refuse to acknowledge the Pledge, currently, because I cannot have pride for a nation that is disgracing the Constitution. Trump’s new ruling with the NFL is directly in violation of our Constitution and our basic civil rights.

Just curious, do you/don’t you participate, and why/why not?

I participate and I also support the players' right to protest peacefully. Their protest is not about the flag or the anthem; that is a right-wing myth dreamed up by the orange guy.

I don't usually attend sports games, so have no reason to stand for the pledge. I might stand, but I rarely make the hand to heart gesture and often don't even say it. I owe allegiance to my government and I don't need to make a public announcement of it.

I was going to say what Kathy the nurse said, but I couldn't say it any better than what she already said. As for you, I have zero respect for someone who disrespects our country, as you have done. But you have the right to do so. And they try to say that liberals don't hate America?

For someone who doesn't want to start a flame war, referring to our President as "Idiot and Chief" is not getting the discussion off to a good start.

And BTW, Trump did not make it mandatory for the NFL to do anything, he just made his opinion known. The NFL made that decision for extremely good reasons. As EMPLOYERS, which they are, they had a fiscal responsibility to rein in the protests ON THE JOB, because it was affecting the bottom line... 10% reduction in revenue last year is not chump change. The players are EMPLOYEES. Any company has a right to set standards that require employees to not do anything that discredits their company or drives customers away.

The controversy behind the '"Pledge" of Allegiance' are the words "under God" as the country includes atheists and agnostics who may or may not be offended, plus, there are many people who want separation of church and state.

The NFL controversy is about protest during the national anthem. The players are using the national stage to express their concerns about oppression.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people, and people of colour," Kaepernick said in a press conference after first sitting out during the anthem. "To me, this is bigger than football, and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street, and people getting paid leave, and getting away with murder."

The opposition to the protesters comes f/ people who think the protest disrespects the flag/country.

I see both sides of the issue. I agree America has a racism problem. America was founded w/ a first amendment that protects a right to protest but it's not absolute.

I might be a little more sympathetic w/ the players if I knew what solutions they were striving for but awareness is where to start. Overall, I'm largely ambiguous/uncommitted.

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.

And to the republic, for which it stands, one nation, under god, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

In keeping with my pledge of allegiance, it is my duty to oppose Trump and his divisive, unjust, and unamerican policies.

That is a good question however I can't say one way or the other because from where I am the pledge is only recited in school so not many will be able to say one way or the other

Funny thing is that the original PoA didn't have " Under God " in it .

    I don't believe in symbolism

Just as wearing a crucifix doesn't make one a Christian , wearing a ( made it China) American flag pin doesn't make one a patriot; Trump is proof of that

I'm pretty sure that you don't know very much about the National Anthem controversy.
