It's not such an involved subject that it would fill an entire book. However, there are many videos and websites dedicated to filing alphabetically. Click on the link below and choose one that you like.

You're right that there are some technicalities- like how to alphabetize names starting with Mc or titles starting with The. You can find these simple rules in many places, or you could simply look at a dictionary and see how they do it.

Learn your alphabet by heart. From aaaa.aaab.aaac .......right up to zzza. and zzzz.
