A word for (or the psychology behind) people who sincerely, consistently misunderstand the words or misread the emotions of others?

Update:

I've known two different people like this. Both thought they were particularly intuitive, that they could read anyone, strangers even, like a book. But it was the opposite. They seem to misunderstand everything. They misread emotions, and find 'hidden meaning' in every little detail of an interaction with someone.

What you described sounds like Asperger Syndrome, but I don't know. It could be a variety of things. Without a diagnosis, it's not good to make an assumption.
