do any of these stories fall under public domain?

im working on a collected universe with classic monsters that reside in the public domain. and i have all the ones i want to used set but there's a couple i am not really sure on. those being The Invisible Man and Who Goes There? (the story that inspired The Thing films). when i look up these books i hear a lot of conflicting information. some stuff i find says they are in the public domain and others say they are covered by copyright. can anyone clear it up for me please?

Usually it depends on when they came out. It seems to have come out (the Invisible man) in 1897 which should mean its public domain. I’m not completely sure but I think if it was before the 20s, usually it is.

I’d still suggest research because I’m not completely certain.

I do not know if this will help, but go to Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.org/ and see if they have the books with the characters in question. Project Gutenberg is an effort to record all written items once they come into the public domain for historic purposes. They may also express guidelines on determining the items which are in public domain once their copyright has expired. They also have many foreign print / language / originated manuscripts as well. I hope this helps.

Different countries have different laws about public domain. Conan is public domain in Europe but still copyrighted in the U.S
