How would you rank German car brands in order of best to worst?

How would you rank German car brands in order from best to worst?

First of all, I want to say that I personally think German car brands are all better than average, as all are reliable, quality and respected.

Personally, my list going from best to worst would go:

1. Porsche

2. BMW

3. Mercedes-Benz

4. Audi

5. Volkswagen

Porsche is more of a sports car brand, they’re mainly owned by the super wealthy.

BMW and Mercedes are luxury cars, they’re owned by the Upper-Class, but the people who own them usually aren’t as rich as people who own Porsche’s.

Audi is a semi-luxury car. They’re mainly owned by the Upper-Middle-Class and are still a high quality car.

Compared to other German car brands, Volkswagen is more average. Despite this, Volkswagens are still MUCH more reliable, better quality and more respected than other ‘average’ car brands. They’re mainly owned by the Middle-Class, however some Working-Class families own cheap, old Volkswagens too.

Do you guys agree with my list? If so, what would you change?

"Porsche is more of a sports car brand, they’re mainly owned by the super wealthy. "

You don't need to be rich in order to afford something like a Boxster.

"BMW and Mercedes are luxury cars, they’re owned by the Upper-Class, but the people who own them usually aren’t as rich as people who own Porsche’s. "

A person who owns something like an AMG G Wagen or an M5 can likely easily afford a 911 GT3 or other higher end Porsche

"Audi is a semi-luxury car. They’re mainly owned by the Upper-Middle-Class and are still a high quality car. "

For something like an A4/A4 yeah, but If you're rocking an R8, you're probably better off than just upper middle class.

"Despite this, Volkswagens are still MUCH more reliable, better quality and more respected than other ‘average’ car brands. "

BWAHAHAHAHA. VW's tend to be less reliable than say Honda or Toyota. In the U.S. they tend to be on par with the domestic makes, only having higher upkeep costs, and tend to have nicer interior materials.

"Do you guys agree with my list?"

Not really, because it's too generalized. A person of above average means (upper middle class, not wealthy), could afford a basic Boxster/Cayman. But that same person likely wouldn't be able to afford an S 65 AMG. Futhermore, I think you're overstating the reliability of these cars. There's a good reason why most MB/BMW/Audi's have a very steep depreciation curve once their warranty is up. The repair costs are staggering, and things break with shock regularity. None of those makes are known for reliability.

"If so, what would you change?"

I would put Volkswagen at the top simply because they have the most complete lineup of the makes you mentioned. MB would be close 2nd.

For mechanical work the older Porsche/ VWs are easiest to work on.

But your list/order is close to my opinion.

They are all garbage except for the Porsche. Just look at the used car prices for all those brands. They are always on fire sale.

Who buys the vehicles is irrelevant as far as the quality of the vehicle as it rolls off the assembly line.

Also, in North America, yes, Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz are near-luxury and luxury vehicles but in Europe, they offer models with far less standard equipment and they are more viewed as common cars. You will even see a lot of Mercedes used as taxicabs even for example.

Rating the brands by manufacturer is rather difficult. If you were to compare them by individual model ( such as Audi A4 vs BMW 3-series vs MB C-Class ), it would be easier as you can rate pros can cons based on comparable models. But to judge a VW Golf against a MB G-Class vs a Porsche 911 is far more difficult as they are 3 very different types of vehicles and would never be cross-shopped by a potential client.
