Is it common for students that are getting an associate's degree to take longer than two years?

Not if they attend school full-time. However, many people in community college go to classes part-time at night so they can continue working a full-time job to pay their living & school expenses.

Yes it can happen for a number of reasons. If a student is not going full-time, if they need to retake courses, if they change programs after starting, etc. Sometimes the program itself is not a 2 year program. For example, my husband went for an Associate's in Respiratory Therapy and it was 2 1/2 year program with summers included.

Not common, but it does happen.

Many students going to a CC are older and have full time jobs.
