What is your favorite book?

It could be one you've read or want to read.

Update:

I see how saying "a book you haven't read" can seem odd as a favorite book, but I had meant that to mean a book you would want to read the most.

Here's one you won't have heard of, even though it's by a Nobel Prize winner: "Dreams of Roses and Fire" by Eyvind Johnson. I prefer it to the more well-known "the Devils" based on the same events. I reread it every few years and enjoy it just as much each time.

First I fail to see how a book you've not read yet can be your favorite book. Therefore I will limit my answer to a book I have actually read: True Grit by Charles Portis. It is a given that the book is better than the movie. (This isn't always the case. The movie Forrest Gump was far superior to the book, for instance). That said, both film versions pale in comparison to the book. While the Cohen Brothers is far superior to the John Wayne version, both fail to capture the raw emotion and action of the book. In both versions, the protagonist Mattie is a petulant teenager rather than a teenager far wiser than her years would indicate.
