You DON’T need a copy, but a real one. So say you lost your license, then go to the DMV site or in person and request another real one that will cost you about $20.

But say for instance are out of town on vacation for a few days, thus need it now for a (few) days till you get home, then can go the the DMV site and print out a copy of your license.
