Why do Christians say the lion shall lay down with the lamb?

I've seen a number of Christians claim this as prophecy, claiming to to be scripture. But, the closest verse I can find is Isaiah 11:6, saying the wolf will live with the lamb, and the lion shall eat hay. Does a verse saying lion and lamb shall lay also exist elsewhere? If not, how did this notion spread through Christianity?

Yeah it isn't there. Another Christian tradition that needed to be challenged. I certainly don't like many of the Christian adages and traditions. They require the truth about everything Christian to be trivialized. Then the next thing you know, they start thinking that those who notice the error are satanic, and arguing about it like they do Christmas.

    Referring to this account?

“And the wolf will actually reside for a while with the male lamb, and with the kid the leopard itself will lie down, and the calf and the maned young lion and the well-fed animal all together; and a mere little boy will be leader over them. And the cow and the bear themselves will feed; together their young ones will lie down. And even the lion will eat straw just like the bull. And the sucking child will certainly play upon the hole of the cobra; and upon the light aperture of a poisonous snake will a weaned child actually put his own hand.”—Isaiah 11:6-8.

The collection of thoughts paints the general overall picture that God’s purpose, even for the animal realm, includes nothing but peace and harmony.

I think things like this is in a few places in the Bible, and it seems as if I have seen this somewhere, like in the Book of Revelation. So I suppose animals will be in the New World with us. I hope my parrots and dogs will be there for me, too.

Isaiah chapter 11 verse 6 is as close as you're going to find to that idea in the Bible. I've heard people say that myself and I always thought it was a Bible scripture but it's not.

No, the lion and the lamb are not mentioned in scripture. They are mentioned together in one or more hymns that I'm familiar with, so that may be where the idea comes from.

  • It's not in the bible.

Isaiah 11:6 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb

In Jeremiah’s prophecy, wolves and leopards are metaphorically, Gentiles. The wolves were seen as outsiders. What he is saying in his prophecy is that God will reach out to the Gentiles in the New Covenant

    This prophecy did come true:

Acts 13:48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.

It spread because it's the truth, it will take place after this corrupt system is did away with, and then Psalms 37:29 will also happen.

"The righteous will possess the earth, And they will live forever on it."

Isaiah 11:6-9 will see a complete fulfillment even in a literal sense. Men, women, and children will be safe and secure wherever they go on earth.

No creature, whether human or animal, will pose any threat. Imagine a time when you will see this entire planet as your home, where you can swim in the rivers, lakes, and seas; traverse the mountain ranges; and roam the grasslands in complete safety.

And when night falls, you will not worry. The words of Ezekiel 34:25 will come true, so that it will even be possible for God’s people to dwell securely in the wilderness and sleep in the forests.

It would be inconsistent for God to inspire such a prophecy to have only a spiritual meaning and not to reflect such things in actual earthly life.

Only supposed Christians who don't know their Bible very well. The full section is:

The wolf will live with the lamb,

the leopard will lie down with the goat,

    the calf and the lion and the yearling together;

and a little child will lead them.

The cow will feed with the bear,

their young will lie down together,

and the lion will eat straw like the ox.

The infant will play near the cobra’s den,

and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest.

They will neither harm nor destroy

    on all my holy mountain,

for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord

as the waters cover the sea.

The animals have been coupled with their natural predators as a metaphor for the peace that will apply throughout the world with the coming of God's kingdom. Doesn't look like any time soon.
