Two carts are sitting on a frictionless track with a compressed spring between them. The sum of the masses of carts A and B is 1.5 kg.?

After the spring releases, Cart B has twice the speed of Cart A. What is the mass of each cart?

    mA + mB = 1.5

    velocity of A is vA

    velocity of B is -2vA (twice A's speed, opposite direction)

    From conservation of momentum

    mB.(-2vA) + mA,vA = 0

    mA = 2mB

    2mB + mB = 1.5

    3mB = 1.5

    mB = 0.5 kg

    mA = 1.0 kg
