) A college wants to determine whether to renovate the gym or the science lab. The college asks you to conduct a survey. You randomly survey 30 students leaving a science club meeting.

a) Explain why the sample may be biased.

b) Describe a better way to conduct the sample.

Update:

A daily newspaper ran a survey by asking readers to call in their response to this question: “Do you support the development of atomic weapons that could kill millions of innocent people?” It was reported that 20 readers responded and 87% said “no” while 13% said “yes.” Identify at least three major flaws with this study.

    a) Well, given a choice between two options (gym vs. science lab), you are sampling from a group that would benefit from picking option B and not at all from picking option A. That could certainly lead to bias.

    b) the sample should be taken randomly from students around the campus.

    EDIT for your update:

Flaw #1: the question is extremely leading.

Flaw #2: the sample size (20 responses) is fairly small.

Flaw #3: 87% of 20 people is 17.4 people saying "no". 17.4 people? This is not possible. There needs to be an explanation of how these percentages were calculated.
