Sam goes to the mall and records how long 100 random strangers (including men, women and children) can each hold their breath. Ken gathers 100 Olympic swimmers and records how long they can each hold their breath.
a) Who do you expect will have a higher mean? Sam or Ken? Explain.
b) Who do you expect will have a higher standard deviation? Same or Ken? Explain.

a) Ken. I expect Olympic swimmers can hold their breath longer.
b) Sam. I expect Olympic swimmers will have close to the same ability of each other. I expect elderly people and infants to have lower capacity than healthy young adults, so the random general population will have more variation.

a) I'd expect Ken's results to have the higher mean because 100 Olympic swimmers would likely have a higher level of cardio-vascular fitness than would 100 randomly chosen individuals.
b) I'd expect Sam's results to have a higher standard deviation because 100 randomly chosen individuals would include persons with a much wider range of cardio-vascular fitness than would 100 trained and active Olympic swimmers.
This question strikes me as belonging more in a health and fitness forum than a mathematics forum.
