Packing for Ireland?

Hello everyone,

I am leaving for Ireland in the middle of this month. I was wondering what to pack to stay warm, dry, and comfortable. I have nice sneakers, and a rain jacket (with a hood). I was wondering if jeans are okay or if they would get too wet, I was also thinking of leggings. Do I need sweaters, or a tee and a light cardigan? Any experienced travelers or Ireland natives I would absolutely love your advice.

Thank you!!

You do not say what you will be doing specifically so I will assume standard sight seeing. Many attractions are outdoors so pack a good (new) water repellent jacket like Colombia or LL Bean. Take good comfortable walking /hiking shoes not sneakers you need ankle support. Jeans are not recommended for hiking or hill walking, bring at least one pair of light weight nylon cargo pants for that. A day pack and small umbrella and brim hat for the rain is recommended. As laundry facilities are everywhere pack light, enough clothing for 4 days to dress in layers for warmth but bring plenty of socks and underwear, Do not bring a sweater because you will probably want to buy a good Aran sweater there. Have Fun, Slante!

There was a fluke this summer in Ireland. They had a major heatwave and I got sunburnt. But in general you should pack warm clothes because it’s like October in July.

At the moment it's cool, about 18 degrees Celsius, overcast and a little damp. We do get a lot of rain here, at any time of the year, so bring a rain jacket and waterproof shoes. Dress in light layers, a t-shirt under a jumper or shirt, or a long-sleeved t-shirt under a t-shirt, and jeans are fine. Leggings are usually worn under long tunics or skirts. If you are from a warm, dry climate, I suggest you bring one or two light scarves to wear around the neck, as this helps prevent you catching a cold.

Most large towns have an inexpensive chain store called Penney's where you can buy bits you might need.

It's not going to rain for the entire duration of your trip to Ireland - if you go at the moment, you might even get straight sunshine. So bring layers, so you can choose suitable clothing depending on the weather.

Suggest you look at the weather forecast for THIS YEAR for the time you will be there and pack accordingly.

What you need at NOON is not the same as what you might want to wear at Midnight.

Good walking shoes for wet situations.

If you like jeans wear them. If it is raining everything gets wet. You have limited luggage space NO ONE expects a daily fashion show. Helps to have something with sleeves and "legs" to reduce the irritation from mosquitoes. A hat with a brim to keep the sun or rain off the face. Sun screen and some bug stuff.

I doubt you need instructions on what is warm in your wardrobe or what clothes are comfortable for your planned activities. A small day bag carries your rain jacket if not needed a sweater to put on when the sun goes down, your water bottle, some snacks, maybe a map for your day's adventure.

Shall we guess if you plan a rural walk in the hills climbing this or that , maybe hours and hours indoors in some museum. Will you be outside continuously from sun up to sundown. Will you be walking everywhere or maybe you rent a bike. PACK what you think is REASONABLE for your anticipated activities.

You make it sound like you might need to pack for torrential rains and blistering heat, blizzards, fine dining, a stroll in the forest, shopping on high street, kissing the stone, strolling in a park , clubbing ,... all in a few items.

Many days with rain expected . Having rain gear with you does not mean you must wear it ALL DAY reason you have a small day bag to add or remove layers as needed during your day.

The U.K. is going through a long term heatwave which is supposed to last until October. There has been no rain for months.
