Black wire (hot) from supply to GOLD colored screw.

White wire (neutral) from supply to SILVER colored screw.

Bare or green wire (ground) from supply to green colored screw.

you need a hot line feed with neutral and ground so that the outlet works all the time. hot goes to the center contact, neutral to the outside one

I think most of them have wires coming out so all you would do is connect them by same color with wire nuts.

In the US at least: Black wire to brass screw. White wire to silver screw.

You should also have a ground lead, which might have a green screw. If you have an uninsulated ground wire along with the black and the white, the uninsulated copper wire should connect to the green screw, or whatever ground point is provided on the fixture (sometimes marked "GR" or "GND". Be careful not to allow the bare ground wire to touch the brass screw or any exposed part of the black wire, especially in the process of mounting the fixture to the box. If the box is metal, use care also to keep the brass/bare black wire from touching the inside of the box.
