No. He was a murderer, thief, slaver and rapist. His "discovery" does not wash away those sins.

No. Despite what some people believe, Christopher Columbus did not discover the Americas, and he was not the first person to prove the Earth was round (that has actually been a generally accepted fact since Ancient Greece).
Christopher Columbus's 1 and only significant contribution was discovering trade winds that Europeans later used when they started making more frequent voyages to the Caribbean. That's it. That's hardly enough to warrant a national holiday, especially given all the horrible things he did to the Natives.
