Is it bad that I want to do more than one thing in life? (career wise)?

I'm 18 and I start college in January (community) and my parents have been kind of breathing down my neck about choosing a career but the though of doing one thing for most of my life makes me extremely anxious. I've expressed to my family that I want to have more than one skill and do more than one thing like build my own house one day, build things, change my own oil, help people, make music, do a sport, have my own business ect. I know and acknowledge that I cannot do all of it in one but they just tell me that I'm being unrealistic and compare me to my cousins who are majoring in neurology, computer science, business, biology etc and telling me that I'm indecisive and a lost cause. I may sound indecisive but I just don't want to limit myself to doing or being one thing in life. what are your thoughts? have you ever done more than one thing or had more than one career? two? three? thanks in advance !!

You absolutely will do more than one thing in your life! Imagine doing just one thing for 50 years.

First of all, remember that you will do some things to earn cash to pay bills etc- it's best if this thing earns a good wage so that you're not spending many hours a week just to get by, and have no time to do all the other things you want to do.

A few things you mention, many people just do as part of everyday life like maintaining their vehicle, other things you mention people do for joy and passion without worrying about payment.

One suggestion is that you train and get experience in construction/building trades- you get skills to build your own home, run a business, take on trainees/apprentices and by doing this help people to learn and develop. If your business is successful, you can set up a community enterprise or charity.

Building trades include engineer, architect, surveyor, electrician, plumber, carpenter, plasterer, general maintenance, property developer etc.Your family may think this sector is not high status, however this is wrong and out-dated.

Research, explore, get ideas, get work experience, be focused and determined, and have a plan. Don't let others put you down.

Best wishes for your future success!

There are specialists and there are generalists. You may be one of the ladder. With that being said, you must chose and GO FOR SOMETHING!

Not making any decision is far worse than picking the wrong thing.

Relax. Chill out. Grow up. First, most people do not do the exact same thing for the rest of their lives. Your college major is not a life sentence, it is a gateway to the next phase of your life. Next, there is a huge difference between what adults do for a living and what they do in their spare time as a hobby. You can play music and sports, tinker with cars or other things, build your own house, do woodworking, and do all kinds of volunteering and still have a job in a different field.

I agree it is overwhelming. But the beauty of life is that you aren't limited to one interest. You don't spend every waking hour at work and can pursue other things on your off time. And best of all … even after choosing a career path … you are allowed to change your mind

You hit it on the head. I was showing signs of being a talented actor when in college. I was in a very powerful play and was asked to come to Hollywood to a major studio for a meeting. They liked me a lot. Set me up with a coach to train my face for the camera. He asked me a question. "Do you want this more than anything on earth?" It took me less than a second to say, "No." In that one second I thought of all the many things I wanted to do with my life and it was MANY. He then said, "Well, I can't help you." Then I countered with; "Does that mean I should leave?" He answered "Yes." So I walked across the lawn and got into my car and drove out of Hollywood. I returned to Hollywood to edit and finish all the laboratory work on 17 full length films. I shot the movies everywhere on the globe. I showed the films on lecture circuits nationwide. I narrated the films from memory on the stage with a microphone. I was one of the leading travel film producers in the USA. I also started several businesses that I invented. I see that now they are copying me. GRUB HUB is one of them that is using my protocol. YOU, can do a million things in your lifetime. If you know in your heart that you have hidden secrets that you are going to use in the future.....then plan on doing it. You will amaze yourself. And you certainly will amaze your parents. You are a rare gemstone. Put yourself into action and make it all come to life. I did it ten times over. And I am not finished yet. Much more to do. Get up. Get out and get going.

Anyone can do basic auto maintenance at home (I have friends, family, etc. that change oil, repair small engines, etc. - community colleges have classes in that which you can take without need for a degree or to make it a full time job). Building things usually needs an engineering degree (you need to know about load bearing walls, etc.) so if you really want to build things, that will be your career unless you plan on using your down time to go get a second degree. Not sure what you mean by "doing" a sport - if you mean playing professionally, you better have already played that sport all through high school and into college, otherwise you can pretty much forget it except for maybe age-appropriate leagues at night and on weekends (i.e., over 30 softball). Business, bio, comp sci all need degrees to even think about getting into the fields, so unless you plan on being a professional student, you will need to pick one and stick with it. Sorry, nut that is the way the world works when you get into higher education.
