It is caused or maintained by thinking. Often it Is maintained or caused by excessive/exaggerated thinking.
We can stop people from thinking. Though giving people brain damage or a lobotomy is often viewed as not nice/unpleasant.
This is one of the best questions ive read on yahoo in 4+ years. It is decades more complicated than that. However, that's a really amazing simplified answer.

Uh....there is. Actually several of them: medication, meditation, yoga, deep breathing, therapy.

The question of cures for anxiety disorders is problematic. If you read psychology journals, you won't see the word "cure." You will see "recovery" and "reduction of symptoms."
If by "cure" you mean a very successful recovery, then you could say that some people get cured. The thing to remember is that there's no cure for anxiety itself. It's natural, part of life.
The Nat. Institute for Clinical Excellence, an official health agency in the UK, has stats on what's best for most patients but not you as an individual. They rank 3 treatments - 1) therapy (CBT), 2) medicine (generally antidepressant), 3) self-help based on CBT.
Recently, there has been encouraging evidence about lifestyle choices, such as the use of breathing exercises and breath awareness during the day.

Mental illnesses can be treated but not cured.
Anxiety is best helped by a combination of medication and talk therapy.

Because curing mental disorders with drugs is pseudoscience
