Statiscally, does anyone know the percentage of impaired drivers that I would come upon on a 15 mile drive? Cant seem to find any stats?

Update:

I know its hypothetical, but its for a class I suddenly find myself having to teach,

You won’t find any statistic for that because it’s impossible to quote one when there are far too many variables.

To put that more simply there is, and never has been, a universal standard “15 mile drive”.

The only stats you will find are those compiled from data collected by police, driver medical checks and similar which will suggest how many drivers per thousand may be medically unfit to drive. Even that statistic will be unreliable because many medically unfit drivers get away with never being identified.

All you could do on your hypothetical 15 mile drive would be to count how many drivers in total you pass (difficult in busy cities and on multi-lane motorways) and then compare that to any published “per thousand” figures you can find. You would likely need to work out how to realistically adjust that for the time of day as well unless you do one 15 mile drive every hour over a 24 hour period and then average out the count for each individual drive.

Take the average DUI accidents for your area, for a certain time frame, assume 168 sq miles for your sample. Divide that average by 168 sq. miles.

It will vary like crazy between Newton, Kansas, and say, Chicago. And, between 4 am and just after midnight.

    See?

National stats? Check insurance stats. Locally the coroners have been required since late 1990s to do a tox screen check on dead vehicle operators- 1/3 drunk/impaired by drugs. % would be total number of vehicle estimated on road with confirmed dead drunks and maybe DUI busts added to divide total- and some police estimates from traffic patrol officers with cynical view of potential bust, job security after football games, other athletic competitions and holiday celebrations. Local conditions will be of main concern for your own health and safety - deer in rut or just out are problem yet with drunks close second. drunks will out number wild deer next week until mid January. Impared drug users- some state with legalized MJ have had a lot of 'impared' driving bust. Best to figure 50% of cars on road are being driven by 'impaired' driver- and make sure you are NOT one of them.

My ''driveway'' is a 22 mile long, dead end access road to the fire trails in my area.

So, if you drive that road you will never meet a drunk driver. And that's because I'm the only person who regularly drives the road, and l don't drink and drive.

It's probably BS and hype, but the state used to insist that half of all accidents involved an impaired driver. Therefore it would be safe to assume that half of all cars you come upon will be operated by impaired drivers.

That depends on when and where. Between 10 pm and 4 am in some places it can be as many as 2 out of 3, and the 3rd is likely to be law enforcement.

It depends mostly on how heavy the traffic is. A fair rule of thumb is that roughly one car in ten is being driven by somebody who should not be on the road just then. Here is a more detailed breakdown that I have posted before:

There is a reason why people do the things they do, and the reasons are not always good ones. We may interact with a hundred drivers in a few minutes. Statistically, one of those drivers will be the worst in a hundred. One will be schizophrenic; 4 will be bipolar (3 severely); 4 will be sociopaths; 4 have clinical rage disorder. 1 or 2 will have clinical Borderline Personality Disorder. 7 of them will be convicted felons, 7 will be alcoholics. A variable number will be under the influence of alcohol, cocaine, meth, and all sorts of other drugs. Some will have just lost a loved one, more will have recently been dumped by a lover. 2 will be in their first year of driving; 2 will not be able to continue driving next year. 20 beat their wives, husbands, boy friends, girl friends. 20 will have been beaten. These are the drivers around us.

Our only defense is to keep cool, think like a professional, and deal with the weird things on the road around us. Driving is never personal but it is perfectly willing to turn our lives into tragedies if we let emotions in while driving. Impatience will sure make it a lot worse. We need to be aware that we are juggling chain saws every moment we are in traffic, that we control our vehicle and lots of unfit drivers are controlling vehicles near us. That's just the way it is and we can't change it.

Based on motorist surveys, one in 60 vehicles has an alcohol-impaired driver during the day, said Fred Zwonechek, administrator of the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety. That jumps to one in 12 at night and perhaps one in four after 11 p.m. in areas with a high concentration of bars..

    There are many variables .
