Be with someone you really like or love. Sharing a vacation, no matter how cheap, is always better than going it alone.

Buy groceries instead of eating out. Stay in less-touristy areas.

Success of a vacation depends on the expectations of you and whoever else is going on the vacation. Low expectations = very little money spent. My best vacations were staying at home -- no work, just total rest. Go riding my motorcycle every day.

For the last 2 years, my brother and wife (kids are grown and away from home) volunteered to work as guides/whatever needed at a lighthouse on the Outerbanks of NC. It was 90+ every day but both said they had a great time.

Simple things like camping. And being immersed in nature doing things like camping and hiking is honestly a lot more fun than sitting on some beach.

Go where there are no people and no services, like a mountain ranch.
