Not all images or statues are idols. For example, decorations on the Ark of the Covenant were not used to pray to or to venerate, they were just used for decoration. There is no indication in the Bible that these were used as an aid to worship God.

The prohibition comes when that image is being used for purposes of veneration, praying, bowing down to, or worshipping.

Using images as a visual aid to pray and worship God is not right as “God is a Spirit, and those worshipping him must worship with SPIRIT AND TRUTH” , John 4:24. Perfect example of that is when Aaron built the golden calf to represent God. When God saw that, thousands of Israelites were killed, see Exodus Chapter 32.

Man made images of living things, whether the things are real, like an image of me. or imagined things, like a griffin. I don't know if I should call a picture, painting, sculpture of a locomotive a graven image. Is my pocket watch a graven image? It's main purpose is to tell time, but it has artwork on it.

In the bible, a graven images means something that was carved or graved into an image that people used to worship and used a god. For example, the bible account of Aaron and the Israelites. When Moses took a long time coming down from the mountain, the people began to get irritated and asked Aaron to make them a golden calf out of their jewelry, Aaron said it represented their god, when really Jehovah was their god. (Exodus 32). For more information, please visit jw.org.
