Half the tine, people dont even read the Forward or Prolog, let alone the Dedication. Dedications are like rolling the credits on a movie, not part of the story.

Yes, I love how Patricia Cornwell always dedicates her books to her wife

Actually, I like reading the dedication very much! I've seen several pages committed to it. I've even seen a few that include the author's agent, editor-in-chief, proofreaders, cover artists, etc.. To me, it's homage to the people who helped make the writer a published novelist.

Well, first off, he/she does not "start" their book that way.

that is what we call a "Dedication" and usually has nothing to do with the actual story.

I'm not supposed to like it or dislike it. Anne, Jesse and Britney are supposed to be pleased.

I don't especially care one way or the other, really.

I enjoy the book. The dedication is the author's business.

My personal favourite was the one dedicated to the author's first year creative writing professor, who had said the author had no talent and should find a job writing advertising copy. Sorry I can't recall which book it was, but I remember laughing until my tea came out my nose.

I really don't care if a book is dedicated to someone or not, I am after the STORY!

Don't care. I want to read the story and not all the other stuff.
