If it is only "cosmetic" rust it can be sanded back, treated with a commercial rust restorer (passivator) and repainted using spray cans. If the rust is more advanced and/or you have some holes, it can be patched using filler and/or fibreglass first. If the rust is structural then it starts getting expensive. The rust must be cut out and a suitably shaped steel patch panel welded in. Sometimes replacing the entire panel is a better option if the rust is extensive. The big cost is often labour.

Start by looking on You Tube for various methods. Then go from there based on your level of skill and giveaf***ness..

I have seen an article telling me to do this

    1. Mask off the affected area with paint-appropriate tape.

    2. spraying or brushing reust remover onto the rust and letting it sit for a few minutes. Then, wipe off with a clean rag.

    3. Clean with a grease and wax remover soap, then air dry.

Sand it all off, prime the metal, then paint it to match the rest of the body.

how bad. is the car worth it to repair it. without taking it to a body shop and having them repair it then everything out there now is just something that will slow it down not stopping it. I live in the northeast rust is a part of life on cars up here. when the time comes that it effects the inspection of the car I go out and get another car. cheaper than putting money into repairing the rust

You have one of three options:

    1) ignore it

    2) get is rust sprayed ( slows down the spread of rust but does not stop it completely ) or

    3) get the rust affected areas repaired or replaced.
