do i need a license of any kind to drive a dirt bike on dirt roads.?

I have been planning on getting a 125 or 150cc dirt bike to travel back and forth on dirt roads to visit a friend of mine. And i was wondering if i need a California drivers license or a motorcycle license to ride that dirt bike even though it is on dirt roads and not on a highway or public roads.

It is trivial to get your motorcycle permit. Get a street legal "dual sport" motorcycle and you can go anywhere. I have never figured out why anyone would get a dirt only motorcycle -- about place you can use one is in an OHV park.

Bike must be titled, insured, have current tabs. You must possess a valid CA license with motorcycle endorsement.

Forest Service and BLM dirt roads are public roads. State or County-maintained dirt roads are public roads. You can only legally ride off-road or on private roads without a license.
