Is it just me or are there not enough Costco's in the U.S.A.?

It seems like every time I go to a Costco it is super busy there, it makes me wonder why don't they build a lot of Costco's.

They like it that way. New ones cost a ton and they pull business from other stores.

That said, I wish we had one on my side of town.

I can't get in Sams but I can get in costco with a gift card despite not being a member. Which suits me fine because I only go 8-10 times a year.

Super busy means profitable...having a cashier just sitting there is a waste of money...

They don't build a lot because it's too expensive. The prices are low and the wages aren't (compared to places like Wal-Mart), so they can't make money without keeping it busy.

  • Their business model requires their stores to be super busy. If they had more stores, they'd have to charge more. When modelling a business, you have to weigh up volume with profit. Costco shift a lot of merchandise with a small mark-up for each. If each product sold involved more premises and more staff, they'd need more mark-up to make the same profit.
