I ordered a new corner sofa. My Turkish/Kurdish step-son asked a friend to help him move the old suite into the spare room. They spoke Turkish and Kurdish and I spoke German. The delivery men spoke French. The doorbell rang. A Sudanese who spoke English. Confronting so many languages he said, 'It's like the United nations.'

Possibly two. Years ago when my grandmother would come for the holidays she would prefer to speak French. It is possible that someone else spoke French with her but I don't specifically remember that happening.

How could you understand each other? Are we to believe your family speaks every language?
