Is Box 1 on W-2 form considered net or gross?

    gross minus pre-tax items like 401K's for example. It's gross subject to income tax

    Gross. If you make under the social security wage limit, Box 3 is a better indicator. Box 1 would have pre-tax benefits subtracted from your actual gross wage.

    Net wages are not part of the W2.
