Why are certain breeds of dogs banned in some countries for example American pit bulls?

I happens because the courts of that country class the breed as a so called 'dangerous breed'.

This varies from one country to another greatly. For example, Pitbulls indeed are unfortunately stereo typically seen as 'vicious' and so are banned in the UK, the English Bull Terrier is banned in both Germany and Switzerland, and Israel prohibits the ownership of Rottweilers.

In my mind however, I personally think that it's really unfair, since a dog's temperament depends on their early life experiences i.e. training and socialization or lack of. It's for that reason that there are no bad dogs, just bad owners. I have personally met shed loads of dogs which are so called, 'vicious breeds' who have been great. I have met loads of German Shepherds and Rottweilers who have been really nice, and I have yet to meet a Doberman, Chihuahua or Staffordshire Bull Terrier who was nasty.

    Hope this helps.

Because they are dangerous, because there is a history of attacks and deaths caused by them and sensible countries have banned this mutt, breeding and owning of this mutt at the time of the ban any in existance had to be regisatered, nuetered, licenced and muzzled when out...they die off and can't be replaced as there are none to replace them with...end of attacks and deaths of humans and other pets

First there is no breed called an American pit bull. In the US, a pit bull is generally a mutt, and a type. There are pit breeds, like the American Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The dog called the American Pit Bull Terrier is NOT an AKC registered breed. There is no nationwide ban in the US on any type of dog, but some cities have enacted a ban on them. Why? Because they are overwhelmingly responsible for the majority of dog attacks on humans that lead to death and maulings. This is proven by actuarial statistics from the insurance companies who pay out the claims, and many insurance companies have a list of banned breeds and types they will not insure. The dogs are bred in a large majority of cases by low lifes who believe that aggression towards humans is a fine trait, and then the dogs are sold to more low lifes who believe the same thing, so you have an entire population of unstable, and potentially dangerous dogs. The phrase often sited is "blame the deed not the breed" but the dogs with genetically poor temperaments don't correspond to that at all. It's the mass fear of these poorly bred dogs that have caused the breed bans, and when you do take the time to actually look at bite statistics, then that fear is not necessarily unfounded.

In the UK where 4 breeds, including the Pit Bull (which isn't actually 'a breed'!) are banned, it was down to public reaction to a number of attacks involving those breeds. Government put a ban on these dogs for no other reason than public pressure.

BLAME THE DEED NOT THE 'BREED'. AND introduce legislation against BYBs (and their outlets) who have ruined certain breeds, including the Pit Bull by, seeing there's a market for aggressive dogs, producing ever more aggressive dogs. This was originally a type of dog bred for fighting - OTHER DOGS. There was never a problem with them and their handlers/owners until they started being regarded as a 'macho dog'.

ANY dog, badly bred and in the wrong hands, has the ability to inflict terrible injury. People seem to forget this.

Because banned breeds have been "proved" by dog behaviour experts and vets, to be unsuitable as just pets and many have traits which can prove dangerous to humans, especially the inexperienced humans who often buy a certain dog breed as a status symbol.

Proven to be aggressive, unreliable, hard wired for aggression, high prey drive ....... As for the pit bull, it is the number one dog responsible for more human fatalities than any other breed, Proven to be deadly to humans. The BYBed Rotts are running a close second.

thousands of sites out there just waiting for you to find them. I cannot list them all. Start with BSL, breed specific legislation. or google your question. You can find all the specifics, whys, whens & wheres
