Identify the backbone of Benzoic Acid.?

    it is a simple benzene ring with a small attached functional group (the carboxyl group -CO2H). R-CO2H where R is benzene (thus the name benzoic acid)

    References to the "backbone" of organic compounds usually mean the carbon chain or carbon skeleton to which the functional groups are attached. The backbone may be said to be highly branched, unsaturated, straight chain etc. Benzoic acid contains only the carboxylic acid group attached directly to a benzene ring and to refer to the benzene ring as a backbone is confusing and uncommon.
