To make money for the author. If they can satisfy most of the listed items all the well and good.

There's not often any symbolism and nor are there many moral messages.

Absolutely no a one of the choices. There is NO MOST in fiction. Some might fit one of those. Other might fit other.
THE MAIN FOCUS for fiction is getting sales. Usually by telling stories, which may be character or plot driven. Few are about symbolism or moral lessons. Want to bore the audience, go with either of those as main focus.
They don't write for English lit teachers either.
