Why is Nancy Pelosi trying to prevent President Trump from speaking to the American people?

She isn't. She is only preventing him from grandstanding in Congress.

It's only a requirement for the president to report to Congress and can be in written form. This is in the constitution.

Soooooo...he can give it in the Senate, the white house or the Wizards basketball arena. Have someone document it, have it delivered to Speaker Pelosi.

He can and does speak to the American people any time he wants, but while the government is not officially operating, he is not being invited by Congress to do so from their chambers.

She is just preventing him from speaking in the House chambers. He can speak anywhere else he likes so long as he submits a report to both houses of Congress on the state of the union. Which right now is partially at a standstill of his doing.

The whole SOTU thing is now an anachronism and just for show. With round the clock press coverage of the government there is no need to inform congress of what is happening as when the Constitution was written and Representatives and Senators had to make long slow journeys to the Capital.

Because she didn't like the way the cameras captured her playing with her dentures in her mouth during the last SOTU.
