I did blend door actuators on my 1999 and 2001 Grand Prix and they worked fine with out messing around. I just disconnected the old actuator, unscrewed it and put the new after market actuator in. When I replaced the blend door actuator on my 2000 Bonneville it would constantly go from cold and back to hot and back to cold again. I tried finding a program to re-initialize it on a Tech II and for 2000 Bonneville's there was no program for the actuators. I ended up holding the battery cables together for a minute after removing them from the battery and was surprised that did the trick.

Doing any repair that involves the electrical system with a disconnected battery is a good idea if you don't want to get jolted by some circuit your fingers brush.

No idea, but starting at 0 seems a good place to start.
