A Conservative told me that the Democrats started the Confederacy. If this is true, why do Conservatives support keeping the statues up?
Shouldn't the Democrats be doing that yet are instead doing the opposite.

It is true; you should have learned that in History class, even in elementary school.
Why do conservatives support keeping the statues up? Well, I can't say who wants to keep the statues up; but the reasons I have most often heard is that they are part of history, and we should not forget history. If you forget the Confederacy, whom will you blame for slavery and the Civil War? Huh? The Union, who fought to end slavery? Or the slaves themselves?
I have never even traveled to the South - the former slave States - so I am not sure I understand the issues well enough to take a position on the statues of Confederate officials. I do understand the idea of wanting to take down statues of people who supported slavery. Still, I suspect that slavery would have ended within a couple of decades even if the Civil War even if the Confederates had won their secession. History was moving in that direction.

Yes, the CSA was founded by people from the Democrat Party, and the Democrats politically dominated the old confederate states until about 40 years ago.
Conservatives are against the "Ministry of Truth" type of history destruction beloved by the Left.

We teach history for a reason.
"Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it"
edit: Although it may be more appropriate for them to be relocated to museums.
