Trump, of course, decisively lost the popular vote in 2016 and barely won the electoral college. And that was in a race where he enjoyed some significant advantages in terms of Russian help, a 20 + Year campaign to smear his rival, and a hugely damaging October surprise. Under any other set of circumstances Trump would have lost. The trends in America are also moving further further away from the right-wing populism which he exemplifies.
