Could a virus kill a dog with a weak heart?

My friends dog just died but the vet had told her it was " just a virus". Could the virus have harmed his heart, or is it more likely the heart failure mimicked a virus?

    I'd bet on heart worms.

These can work a dog's heart to death.

It takes only one infected mosquito bite

    to kill a dog.

The vet may have been mercifully untruthful,

instead of asking if the owner

gave the dog heart worm medication,

    on a regular basis,

when a no answer would have pointed to the death

    being easily preventable.

    Also, treating for heart worms,

on an occasional basis can kill a dog,

by killing a lot of worms, all at once,

    clogging the heart.

The treatment has to be monthly,

    to prevent an accumulation.

viruses DO invade the heart, of most mammalian species.

It usually causes cardiomyopathy, an enlarged heart which is not a good sign.

Yes to both questions actually, and the same can happen in humans too.Viruses, simply cold viruses, can sometimes attack ones heart. That can lead to a number of outcomes including death even for a healthy person.

A simple virus like kennel cough can kill because of the ongoing complications such as pneumonia. So even a simple virus needs to be watched and especially if the dog had a pre-existing heart condition.

Vets will often put dogs on antibiotics, not to kill the virus as it won't, but to stem any complications from the virus such as chest infections.

That's entirely possible depending on the virus and other circumstances.

    I don't know. I'm not the Vet.

And what did the necropsy show?

When animals have other illnesses/diseases any virus can be lethal to them. It's like the elderly or people with HIV that can die from the flu.

A human strep infection can easily kill your dog. And yes a virus can kill a dog with a weak heart. It's much more likely however that your dog laid down on a Coco mat that's the mat that you wipe your feet with at your front door made of Coco fibers and was poisoned to death or your dog ate a piece of chocolate and suffered a heart attack.

Probably you know if your immune system is compromised and really weak it would be easier too. That’s why you gotta get all the rest you can take some pain pills and do everything you can to give it a boost/little extra help to give yourself the best chance possible of fighting off and killing the virus. Eating healthy in the first place will prevent this kind of thing from happening or at least make it easier if it does.

A dog with a weak heart taking a sh1t could kill it.
