What is appropriate to charge as new web developer/designer?

I recently got a call from the church I work for asking for a meeting about hiring me to update the church website. I've never done web work for profit before, always only for fun. So I don't have any experience freelancing at all.

The website requires updates in links, photos, removing tbs and pages, and adding videos and photo galleries. Updating information and such things like that. Text will be provided for me. I'm likely to have to use my own camera to take photos of the building and what not.

How much is fair to charge? should it be a lump sum or by hr? Any help would be great!

Update:

I dont do computer work for them at all, not even close they are specifically trying to pay me to do this work

$25 - $50. Don't cheap yourself out if you know how to do it.

You need to charge hourly for it, and give them an estimate. Detail the scope of work out, and figure out how long it will take you. Then decide on a fair hourly rate (in US I could see you charging anywhere from $25-$50/hour).

Never do a lump sum, that's asking for trouble. You'll get taken advantage of.

What is your experience in IT -- i.e. how long have you been working in the industry? If it is for pocket money, then just the minimum wage, but let them know if is a special rate. It's a Church (charity) so probably not a lot on money to spend on the changes.

Whatever you charge now, they'll expect a similar price next time.

One thing you might think about is maintenance, updating things online, making sure it's running right, just being able to "fix" or "update" things. If it is a one time thing, well then I would try to give them an estimate after you seriously try to investigate the amount of work involved. If they update the site (or will want to) they will possibly need someone to do that, like a monthly service, which of course would require more services/pay. Really be honest with yourself, can you handle it AND can you update it when needed? Good luck -M

Find an hourly rate that's acceptable to both of you. Ask them what the person who built the site charged. You probably shouldn't do a "Lump Sum" rate since you've never bid your services before. It's likely to take you longer since you'll want to impress them with your work so that they'll feel comfortable being a reference on your future resume.
