Does anybody agree with me that people should stop using the r-word?

The word retard is a mean word. I hate the wold retard. The word retard is offensive to people with disabilities. People with disabilities have feelings just like everybody else. Although I don't always like telling other people what they should do and what they shouldn't do, I really think people should stop using the word retard.

Update:

I think that it's really important to respect people of all abilities.

Update 2:

I support freedom of speech but that doesn't mean I tolerate discrimination.

I will not tolerate bigotry.

Yes, I don't know how the word retarded even became a put down. Retarded means slow. A blanket that is "fire retardant" slows down flames. If someone is slow or late getting somewhere we say they are 'tardy". The words are not meant to be pejorative. A person described as mentally retarded simply meant their mental skills were slower just as someone with a physical disability would move slower.

The irony is when people show their own stupidity by using the word retarded to mean dumb, silly or messed up, which are not synonyms of the word. People on YA have even used the term "Libatard" showing their own ignorance of the suffix "tard".

So yes, people should stop using the term as they usually only end up embarrassing themselves.
