Is buying a refurbished laptop better than buying a new one?
I took my old laptop(10 years) in for repair, and the tech said the motherboard was beyond repair, it was really damaged . He recommended me getting a refurbished one.

The repair technician was probably correct about your old laptop. He actually did you a favor by telling you not to put more money in a laptop that was not worth the cost. If the refurbished laptop is a brand you're familiar with and has a good guarantee/warranty ( one year ), then decide if the difference in price versus a "new" laptop will save you the money you want. Computers refurbished by a manufacturer usually have the original one year warranty like a new computer would have.

Buying a refurbished laptop is a great deal like buying a used car. It's cheaper, but someone else has had a chance to put some miles on it before it lands in your hands. While the person selling it says "it's all good, we checked" you aren't getting the value that goes with buying new.

Of course he did ... did you happen to think that he may not be telling you the truth just to sell you a refurbed laptop??? I build and repair computers as a sideline and have 33 years experience at it and I've only ever seen 1 MoBo "damaged beyond repair and that was due to physical damage. You might want to consider a 2nd opinion...

Buying refurbished laptop is kind of lottery. You can get good and can get bad.You still have 90 days warranty.

Hello!
With the laptop being 10 years old I doubt there would be "New" Parts available but if there are the difference simply means a Refurbished unit has been repaired and deemed operational in some capacity. It can sometimes be risky to buy refurbished parts especially if they are second hand or third party, just because you may not know what parts they used or how it was done. With the computer being that old however I might recommend investing that money into a new laptop and having an authorized service provider help you transfer the data to your new machine.
Hope this Helps!

No. New of course is always better, but you have the option of refurbished if you can't afford a new one/want to save money
