First off, they are solitary animals and as adults don't do well with others. Also, they are not automatically friendly or cuddly. If you do not handle them often, they will bite. Sometimes the ones you get at the pet stores are older and have had little handling (because they bite). My brother growing up had many over the years and only 1 of them could be handled without fear of getting bitten. Also, they only live 2-3 years average and they are escape artists. Also, they are active at night and sleep during the day, and can be grouchy when disturbed.

Feed and water it. Please clean the cage every other day regularly.

Both K and Bee gave great advice, but I will tell you right now that if you don't tame that thing and get it used to being handled right away, it will bite the crap out of you all the time. I had hamsters for YEARS and learned early on that you have to socialize them, almost the same way you would a cat or dog. You have to get it used to people very early on or you will have nothing but problems with it and not want to play with it anymore.

Try and find a breeder in your area with a mom about to give birth, reserve a baby, and when you can take it home, start the process of handling and training. Some pet store hamsters are old and tired of people. If you get a baby who will grow up with you, you'll have all the benefits of owning a hamster with none of the bad.

Me and my ex used to have 2, they were dwarf hamsters and very small, kinda difficult if you want to take them out of their cage because theyre super fast and can fit into anything. We lost one of them once but he showed back up a few days later, he was honestly probably in the walls/floor boards.

Dont get them wet, they take sand/dust baths

They can get kinda stinky, or territorial and kill another one sometimes.

    But very cute!

I had two. They don't live as long as cat's or dogs. But are lower maintenance. Feed them, change their bedding, clean their cage, give them fresh water. I also bought them treats. They are happy with a wheel. I also had one for them to run in outside their cage. Cute little animals. I didn't own them at the same time. Certain types can be aggressive towards one another. Depending. When you buy one ask the sales person anything you may want to know. But hamsters are lower maintenance compared to some other pets. Most are nocturnal. So I wouldn't put one in your bedroom. They will keep you up at night running on their wheel. Also, they move around a lot. So they're not content laying in your lap like dogs.
