A weak electrolyte is an electrolyte that dissolves in water to give a relatively small percentage of ions. Examples of weak electrolytes are weak acids, weak bases, and insoluble salts.

For example, for the weak acid HCN in water, the equation is

    HCN(aq) + H₂O(ℓ) ⇌ H₃O⁺ + CN⁻(aq)

An equation for a generic weak acid HA in water is

    HA(aq) + H₂O(ℓ) ⇌ H₃O⁺ + A⁻(aq)

The ionization of a weak electrolyte is not complete, so the double arrow ⇌ is used.
