What kind of coffee am I thinking of...?

What I want is basically just a flat white but with less milk, I mean like no more than about half what they usually put in.

I thought it was called a macchiato but apparently that is something very different.

Is there a name for what I want? Seems like there are about 50 or 60 different types of coffee now so I hope somebody can tell me what to ask for, or do I just need to ask for a flat white with less milk?

Every place that makes coffee calls it something different. If you are getting your flat white at Starbucks, order a short. That's all I ever drink - short flat whites. It's only an 8oz cup with a double ristretto shot of espresso, so the coffee to milk ratio is quite high - it is not milky at all.

That's always my trick when ordering coffee. Most other coffee places only have 12oz cups as their smallest cups, so I order a cafe latte with a double shot and only fill the cup 2/3 full with milk.

A macchiatto SHOULD be an espresso shot with a dollop of foamed milk on top - definitely not the same thing. They have actual macchiatos at Starbucks if you ask for one. But they sell gross sweetened beverages that for some reason they also call macchiatos.
