You can file an amended return converting the MFS (Married Filing Separate) return into a MFJ (Married Filing Joint) return. You have up to 3 years to make this change. For example for 2018 taxes, the original filing deadline is 4/15/19 and you have until 4/15/22 to file this amendment.

If only one spouse has filed, then amend that return into MFJ and add the other spouse's info. If both spouses have already filed MFS returns, then simply amend either one into MFJ and the IRS will automatically zero out the other spous's original return.

Be aware that although you have 3 years to amend from separate returns to a joint return, you cannot amend back to separate returns after April 15th 2019. It doesn't matter if its an original joint return or one that was MFS then amended to MFJ.

So if the relationship is shaky or something like that, it might be best to wait with the amendment. You could always amend into a joint return later (up to 3 years later), but once you go joint you can't go back.

You have 3years to merge into one return. Pick one of the two MFS returns and amend it. The IRS will zero out the other MFS return.

If, by any chance, you meant to ask if you could undo a joint return, that deadline is 4/15 of the following year. After that, the joint return cannot be undone.
