Can a retainer move your teeth or does it just keep them in the same spot?

Depending on how it's made, a retainer *might* be able to move a tooth or several teeth very slightly.
That's basically how Invisalign works - the teeth are repositioned on the plaster model and the retainer is made with them in the new position.
Wire retainers can sometimes move teeth slightly also, but not all retainers are capable of doing that.
And any degree of movement will be very slight.
