Was my answer in the test correct?

I took an English and there was a question of multiple choice that went like this: My wife wants me to watch this film, but I ---------already seen it. Two of the choices were "had" or "have", I choose "had". Was my answer correct?

Little dificult. Have.....as the verb 'wants' is the present tense.

"I had seen it" is in the past perfect, which is used for an event prior to an event in the past. "My wife wants" is not in the past. It is in the present. Therefore "I have seen it."

"but I HAVE already seen it", not "had".

Have.....as the verb 'wants' is the present tense.

However..." My wife WANTED me to watch this film but I HAD already seen it".

Yes. Had is past tense, you saw the film in the past.
