How should I take X per day as needed medicine?

I had wisdom tooth removal recently and some of my medicine says X per day as needed, does that mean I should only take it every X hours of I need it, or every X hours, with additional doses of symptoms return before then?

    "As needed", so you should only take amount "X" only if needed. Don't exceed the dose "X" during a 24 hour period. It sounds like painkiller medication.

    Take 24 hours (the number of hours in a day) and divide by the value of X. That tells you how many hours between each dose.

    Take it as you feel you need it, but not more frequently than every X hours.
