how should i present this relationship in a story?

I want my character to be suedo adopted by two other (much older) characters. I m not sure if I should have her call them mam/dad normally or have her call them mam/dad once or twice for emotional affect. which would work better and which would you rather see in a story?

You present the relationship as the characters see it. If the foster parents wish to be called mam (or mum. Dialect?) and dad, or the child thinks of them or loves them as though they were her parents, then she calls them mam and dad. If they and she have a friendship or more formal relationship, she might call them Dan and Shirley or Mr and Mrs Jones.

"mom" and "mam" are two different things.
