No, the US was not there to protect Syrians. Until the Russians intervened, the uninvited US forces in Syria had been doing very little to combat ISIS and were really there to bolster the anti Assad forces to overthrow the Syrian government. US foreign policy is not made by the United States, it is decided by the state of Israel.

Collateral damage in the offensive to drive Islamic State out of its Raqqa headquarters was inevitable when it occupied civilian areas. Raqqa was where, among other things, terror attacks on Western countries were planned and terrorist leaders like the leaders tof the attacks in Paris were trained. If the US-led forces had bombed the town with no regard for civilian fatalities as the Syrian and Russian air forces did in towns like Aleppo the death toll would have been much greater.

"We" were there to launch an air campaign against ISIS. Do ISIS control any meaningful territory in Syria? No. Why? Because of the air strikes. The West took out ISIS from Syria and Iraq. Russia took out the "rebels" from Syria. And because of that, Syria is stabilizing and normality is returning after 8 years of war.

No, the Americans are there to turn Syria into an obedient distopian Islamic theocracy like the other gulf states.

Saudi Arabia executed 37 people this week, mainly for merely speaking, this is what they seek.

Don't forget the 500,000 Syrians killed by their own government. I know the lefties like to ignore the barrel bombs dropped on civilian areas from Assad's forces.

The aim of the West wasn't to protect civilians, if the goal was the protection of Syrians, they would have targeted those who were responsible for the majority of civilian deaths - Syrian forces.
