The major reason people give for preferring Apple computers is because "it's easier". Now that is of course a matter of opinion, people who learned how to use Windows will naturally find it easier to learn Windows. People who learned the Apple OSX is will find that easier. Even the people who learned Linux will find it easier to navigate around on that interface.

A second reason they give is that it's "more secure" because it doesn't get viruses. It doesn't get viruses because virus writers don't bother targeting it, there just aren't enough of those computers compared to Windows to make it worth their effort. However, a lot of computer work is done on the Internet these days, and the types of malware that work on one architecture will probably also work against another architecture, as the common platform is the Web itself. In cases like that, a Mac is just as vulnerable as a PC, probably more so, as fixes for vulnerabilities will come to the PC first, before it makes its way down to a Mac. And also in the name of making things "easier", the Mac OSX is often intentionally left vulnerable to avoid inconveniencing the user. Most OSX users are superusers by default on their computers, meaning they have full access rights to everything on their computers and malware can take advantage of that vulnerability. Windows used to be like that for many years too, until Microsoft finally got wise and started implementing minimal superuser rights restrictions on Windows. Linux and Unix was always way ahead of game on this type of thing.

Third reason was that everything just works right out of the box on a Mac. Whereas in Windows a lot of hardware might not work right out of the box, until you download or install some drivers for them, everything in a Mac is already designed to work with that OS, and that OS will have all the proper drivers already in place. So this is an advantage, but a dubious one at best, it basically means you're celebrating having less choices available to you.

They say apple computers dont get viruses BUT they can still run malicious code, which in PC terms, is called a virus XD

What separates Apples from the competition is its steep price and the feeling you get from thinking you have something better because it cost more

From an "enthusiast's" perspective, nothing other than the supposed cool factor of being ripped off for name recognition. Some say that Apple was more intuitive for beginners but I am not even sure if that holds true any more. There was a time (a very short time) that Apple did outshine MS when it came to graphics near the beginning of the PC craze but that soon fizzled as everyone began to emulate everyone else.

  • Nothing. The hardware of an Apple is much the same as that for a Windows computer apart from the boot system. If you use the right virtual machine software, you can run Windows, Linux and MacOS (which is a Linux clone) on the same machine at the same time. Traditionally, Apple machines were better at visual tasks and IBM machines were better at number crunching, but now they run different versions of the same software. Comparing like with like, Apple costs around twice as much as other people's hardware - but it's "cool" (like having Nike ticks on your trainers). Charlatans through the ages have made huge profits from "cool".
